About us

Is it unusual for a five-year olds favorite books to be the Little House series? My mother thought so, glancing skeptically at me while reading out loud Laura Ingalls Wilder’s in depth description of butter-making. But I loved it. I was captivated by the story of a young pioneer girl and her family living on the frontier.

Those early pioneers worked hard to build a home, a community and a country. They struggled to make a good life for themselves despite the hardships that existed all around them. They were thrifty, self-sufficient, prepared for anything and embraced new technological advances that could improve their lives.

Fast-forward to present day where my husband and I am reading the same books to my daughters, watching the same amazement on their faces as they relate to a character who never had a playroom full of toys, never watched TV or used a mobile phone…but still found simple joys in every day.

My girls’ eyes lit up listening to stories of Laura and her sisters picking flowers by the creek, making sugar snow from maple syrup, and drifting off to sleep to the sound of Pa’s fiddle.

The idea for Modern Pioneer was born from these moments reading to my daughters.

We can all learn a thing or two from early pioneer families. We can learn to embrace life with the same determination and industrious spirit that brings great opportunity and adventure. At Modern Pioneer, we try and weave this philosophy into everything we do.  We believe in high-quality goods that represent the simplicity and resourcefulness of the early pioneers but are practical for modern day use at home or camp.

We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line and let us know what you think.

Sincerely,
Katie and Tim Blacquier

I vividly remember the Little House books when I was a young girl. Listening inquisitively to my Mom as she read me chapter after chapter of a young Laura Ingalls Wilder living during the Pioneer-era of the 1800’s.

Those early pioneers worked hard to build a home, a community and a country. They struggled to clear the forest, to plant, to harvest, and to make a good life for themselves despite the hardships that existed all around them. They were thrifty, self-sufficient, prepared for anything and embraced new technological advances that could improve their lives.

They lived by this motto:

Eat it up,
Wear it out,
Make it do,
Or do without.

Fast-forward to present day where my husband and I am reading the same books to my daughters, watching the same amazement on their faces as they try to relate to a character who never had a playroom full of toys, never watched TV or used a mobile phone…but still found simple joys in every day.

The idea for Modern Pioneer was born from these moments reading to my daughters. Take the great aspects of that time in American history: the spirit, work-ethic and inventiveness, and combine it with the the technology and manufacturing of today to create a brand that represents the best of both worlds.

We believe in high-quality goods that represent the simplicity and work-ethic of the early pioneers but are practical for modern day use at home or camp.

We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line and let us know what you think.

Sincerely,
Katie and Tim Blacquier

A “Modern Pioneer” is someone who is:

  1. Self-sufficient. They can get by comfortably if the supply chain breaks or power goes out.
  2. Prepared. If an emergency strikes they can survive and aid others until normalcy returns.
  3. Forward-thinking. They embrace new technologies that can make their lives more efficient without becoming completely dependent on those technologies should they be disrupted or disappear.
  4. Social. They seek out the company of family, friends and neighbors for intellectual stimulation, skill-building and entertainment.
